Mayor’s Office of Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs | #HateStopsWithUs Campaign

To kick off AAPI heritage month, the Mayor’s Office of Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs reached out to Eighty2degrees to create an out-of-home campaign to raise awareness about the violence faced by Asian Americans. From restaurant owners to activists, the campaign highlighted members of the DC community through portraits and testimonials.

My role: design & direction

Designed at Eighty2degrees | Creative direction by Ambica Prakash & art direction by Hannah Fichandler

Because community members were photographed in symbolic environments, I chose to make each billboard image-forward with soft gradient overlays to add feelings of warmth and hope. Each billboard uses a color palette from the imagery to create a cohesive look and feel, while allowing the image to come forward most prominently.

Billboards were displayed in Chinatown, with additional ads created for Bikeshare and social media. Due to messaging reasons, the bus ads and Metro dioramas that had been designed were not approved to run throughout the city.
